Project 5050 was established in November 2022, a day after the fifth elections, with the goal that the next government and Knesset will be composed of 50% women and 50% men.
Since its inception, the project has been working towards the vision of 5050 women and men in all decision-making tables: in the Knesset, in the government, in local authorities throughout the country, in public NGOs, in public committees, at every table where decisions are made that affect all of us.
We have set a clear goal, we have a plan, we are working together with activists throughout the country and in networks in order to reach the public and decision-makers, institutional factors, the media, academia, and more. In order to set a clear goal - 5050! And to recruit as much public support as possible for our goal.
During 2023 and towards the local elections, we operated in the municipal space. Dozens of local groups were established and towards the elections we reached over 100 lists of candidates, throughout the country, who committed to 5050 and a vision to promote gender equality in the city/council. The success was enormous - a record number of lists ran throughout the country, a record number of female candidates who formed a list and candidates for the head of cities/councils.
On Oct 7th, 2023, three weeks before the local authority elections, this activity was stopped together with the brutal war. The local elections were postponed and the activity of 5050 grew to be in three planes -
- Rehabilitation 5050 - a demand from all rehabilitation centers to be with 50% women at the decision-making table.
- Municipal 5050 - continued activity at the municipal level even in times of emergency.
- National 5050 - while the political picture is still unclear, but the moment the next elections are clarified, we will be there with the vision - 5050 in all parties! So that the next Knesset will be 5050. So that the next government will be 5050.

Project 5050 was founded by Yael Yechiely, a social entrepreneur, who has been a partner for the past decade in leading social changes and struggles, in the fields of religious freedom, human rights, and equality. She founded the project following years of research and understanding the situation on the ground. For a year, Yael held physical and on-line meetings, operated on the network, and recruited many activists and activities that joined her in the process.
The day after the national elections, in November 2022, Yael decided to publish the project to the world and invited anyone who wanted to participate. At first, hundreds joined, and then thousands. During the first year of the project in 2023, over 40 municipal groups were established. The activists met with candidates, mayors, and council members. Hundreds of lists declared that they are 5050. Following the “Iron Swords” war, the elections were postponed, and the activity towards the elections was postponed. At the beginning of the war, Yael Yechiely, together with the 5050 team, joined the establishment of “The Anchor for Military Families”, while the team returned to the mission: 5050 in all decision-making tables.
